Department Introduction

Department of Physics (Global Campus)
Introduction
The Department of Physics (Global Campus) is specialized in modern science and technology such as semiconductor electronics, nanostructures, new material development, energy-related technology, and quantum information. Practical education facilities have been established to provide training programs at the graduate level. In the field of nanostructures and semiconductors, we undertake research into the processing, modification and characterization of electronic and optoelectronic materials, and into the design, fabrication and testing of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices. Applied optics, an increasingly important field for all optical telecommunication networks, is also one of our specialized research areas. Most recently, we has opened courses and research opportunities for quantum information technology, such as quantum information theory, device design based on quantum computation, and quantum matters. Currently we have 12 faculty members who are performing joint theoretical/experimental collaborations in the fields of nanostructures, semiconductors, new energy-related materials, optical devices, quantum materials, and quantum information. The Quantum Information Research group was selected for the Brain Korea 21 Grant by the Ministry of Education. This 3-year research grant provides monthly salary and travel expenses for graduate students and post-doctorates. The Department has very active and well-funded research facilities, offering excellent opportunities for students wishing to proceed to the degrees of Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy. Major facilities established for the major include PL system, E-beam evaporator, IR detector characterization system, spectroscopic ellipsometry system, high temperature annealing system, wire bonder, tunable diode laser, Ar laser, reflectance and transmittance measurement system, RF spectrum analyzer, fusion splicer, He-Cd laser, vacuum evaporator, high-performance computer cluster.
Research Area
Research Area Contents
Solid State Physics The physical properties of diverse phenomena in solid states are studied through theory and experiment. Based on the solid-state theory, the physical understanding of energy-related materials such as thermoelectric devides is explored.
Semiconductor Physics We study electron transport, optical properties, and structural properties of silicon and III-V semiconductors. We also study the production and characteristics of TFT-LCD, solar cells, and image sensing devices.
Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics Employing the quantum many-body theory, the electronic structures, the charge transport, quantum entanglement, and quantum phase transitions in three-dimensional or low-dimensional quantum lattice systems are theoretically investigated.
Optics Based on the understanding of the interaction between light and matter, nanophotonics, semiconductor and display optics, nonlinear optics, optical fiber science, and quantum information are explored.
Electronic Structure Calculation Based on the first-principle density-functional theory, the properties of diverse quantum materials are investigated. Furthermore, we explore the efficient method for material research by using the machine learning
Quantum Informattion We study and develop the single-photon sources based on the solids which enables the quantum communications and sencing
